Welcome to a New Era of Market Sentiment Analysis
I introduced something I’ve been working on for months—and I genuinely believe it will change how you trade and invest: the Market Mood Meter (MMM).
Integrated into the Forecaster Terminal, this new indicator is built to simplify complex decisions and give you a crystal-clear view of the market’s emotional state. Let’s dive into how it works, why it’s different, and how to make the most of it.
What Is the Market Mood Meter?
The Market Mood Meter (MMM) is a statistical sentiment indicator designed to tell you if the market is in a phase of panic selling (oversold) or FOMO-driven euphoria (overbought). Unlike CNN’s Fear & Greed Index—which applies to the entire stock market and relies on multiple external metrics—MMM is price-based and instrument-specific.
It’s calculated using the average of three proprietary indicators already familiar to Forecaster users:
Together, these form a single, clean sentiment score that you can instantly interpret.
Two Powerful Uses: Mood & Timing
1. Understanding Sentiment
Use MMM as a mood indicator, just like a dashboard light. When it falls below -100, the market is in panic; when it climbs above +100, we’re in euphoric overbought territory. These are often the exact moments when market bottoms and tops form.
For example, the S&P 500 recently hit panic mode (see figure below), signaling a potential buying opportunity might be approaching.
2. Timing the Perfect Entry (or Exit)
Here’s the real power of MMM: timing trades with sniper-like precision. It’s a simple three-step strategy:
Step 1: Wait for Extreme Sentiment
Look for the indicator to enter the oversold (< -50) or overbought (> +50) zone.
Step 2: Look for Divergence
Watch for a divergence between price and the MMM—e.g., a lower low in price but a higher low in MMM. This signals the emotional exhaustion of the current trend.
Step 3: Zero Line Confirmation + Divergence
When MMM crosses the zero line, it signals a high probability of a trend reversal. Then wait for a second divergence to fine-tune your entry point—this is your green light to act.
Real-World Examples in Action
We applied this exact strategy to trades in:
EUR/USD: Entered after confirming a bullish divergence and zero-cross—result: strong upward move.
DAX: Timed a short entry at the market top by identifying overbought sentiment and a bearish divergence.
Bitcoin: Detected a top right before Christmas with a textbook zero-cross and divergence—leading to a significant correction.
PayPal: Currently in an alert zone—waiting for the zero-cross to confirm an upcoming trend reversal.
Nike: Recently provided a perfect setup after combining all three MMM timing steps.
Context Is Key: Combine MMM with Other Tools
While MMM is powerful alone, its effectiveness skyrockets when used together with the rest of the Forecaster Terminal suite:
Fair Value Analysis: Confirms whether the market is undervalued or overvalued.
Seasonality: Adds a historical probability lens.
Wyckoff & Speed: Provide early signals of momentum shifts.
This multi-angle approach helps avoid false signals and strengthens your confidence in each trade.
Conclusion: One Indicator to Rule Them All?
The Market Mood Meter is more than just a mood indicator—it’s a complete timing system designed to help you trade smarter and invest with conviction. Whether you’re looking at short-term moves or long-term trends, MMM adds clarity, confidence, and consistency to your strategy.
Try it out, backtest it, and as always, combine it with the other features in the Forecaster Terminal for best results. We’ll continue to cover more examples in future webinars, so stay tuned!
